Announcement of the June winners of the Étudiants-chercheurs étoiles Award

Québec’s Chief Scientist, Rémi Quirion, is pleased to announce the June winners of the Étudiants-chercheurs étoiles Award, a competition spearheaded by the three Fonds de recherche du Québec.

Award winner, Fonds Nature et Technologies

Anna Mazhorova, PhD Student in Physical engineering At École Polytechnique de Montréal

Award-winning article: Label-free bacteria detection using evanescent mode of a suspended core terahertz fiber. Published in Optics Express, Vol. 20, Issue 5, pp. 5344-5355 (2012)2011

Award winners, Fonds Santé

Christian McIntire and Katherine Labbé, Masters student in biochemistry at McGill University and Doctoral student in microbiology and immunology at McGill University

Winning article: Cellular Inhibitors of Apoptosis Proteins cIAP1 and cIAP2 Are Required for Efficient Caspase-1 Activation by the Inflammasome. Published in Immunity, Volume 35, Issue 6, p. 897-907, 23 December 2011

Award winner, Fonds Société et Culture

Jocelyn Lachance, Postdoctoral Researcher in Sociology, Institut National de la Recherche Scientifique – Urbanisation, Culture et Société

Award-winning publication: L’adolescence hypermoderne. Le nouveau rapport au temps des jeunes. Published in Presses de l’Université Laval, November 2011.

In addition to promoting careers in research, the competition aims to recognize the exceptional research contributions of college and university students, postdoctoral fellows and members of professional bodies who are enrolled in advanced research training programs in the areas covered by the three Fonds.

Every month, each Fonds will award $1000 to a student researcher. An overview of the recipient’s project and a photo of the recipient will be featured on the Web site www.frq.gouv.qc.ca.
